Most Popular Oil Paintings of the Aughts: Van Gogh
Forget Koons, Hirst and Murakami: The artists who ruled the 2000s, in terms of the number of paintings they sold, are all long-dead. According to WholesaleArtMall.com, a website that sells hand-painted replicas of famous artworks, the best-selling paintings of the last decade were, in order, Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry Night” (pictured) and “Café Terrace at Night,” followed by Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss,” Claude Monet’s “Poppy Field at Argenteuil” and the Mona Lisa.
Well, according to that all-powerful cultural barometer of 90s art, Buffy, when the first episode of the fourth season, The Freshman, aired in 1999, the most popular oil paintings were actually Klimt’s “Kiss,” Monet’s “Water Lillies” and, I believe, Dali’s “Persistence of Memory,” based on the posters that the episode’s gang of freshmen-eating vampires would steal from newly decorated dorm rooms. So, obviously, van Gogh is the real upstart art star of the aughts.
